Temple Talk
As we conclude the book of Exodus this week with the twin Torah portions of Va’yakhel and Pekudei, Rabbi Richman and Yitzchak Reuven pause to ponder the baffling mystery of the Golden Calf, one of the most heinous sins in Israel’s history, and explore its connection to the subject of our current Torah readings… the construction of the Tabernacle. What do our holy sages mean by their Midrashic statement, “G-d declared: ‘Let the gold of the Tabernacle come and atone for the gold of the calf’.” Is it that simple? Is the Tabernacle just a “kosher” version of golden calf, providing a fixed focal point of worship? Or – as is the case of Betzalel, the architect of the Tabernacle whose very name means “in the shadow of G-d” – is there more here than meets the eye?
You might have thought that the problem of the Golden Calf was resolved 3,000 years ago. Well it wasn’t! It is just as relevant today as it ever was, and our hosts discover that the people of Israel must choose whose side they are on. And Israel is still burdened with the noxious spirit of the deceptive Mixed Multitude, who today seek to create their own false god, just as they did in those days.

Maimonides’ Laws of the Chosen House, chapter 7: All of the vessels to be used in the Holy Temple are considered to be part and parcel of the Holy Temple itself. Therefore, creating any vessel for use in the Divine service is considered to be an aspect of building the Holy Temple.
